The Theme Thursday challenge is Hats.

I chose a photo of Mrs. Lawrence Lewis (as she was called back then) a suffragette who gave her all for what she believed in.

While she looks quite mild mannered; in reading about her, you quickly learn that she was fierce.

Dora was badly mistreated in the Occoquan Workhouse here in Virginia (1917-1919), as were other women.

The prison buildings at Lorton, Virginia have recently been transformed into an arts center.

We’ve come a long way baby…..

Interesting how this post all began with a ‘hat’ and my new Tim Holtz stamps ;)

Thankyou for your kind words, I’m feeling better about the situation every day but it still freaks me out when I think about it. It’s the what-ifs that are the worst.
Anyway, I love this creation. When a piece of art has a story behind in like this one with the womens incredible story, it makes it so much more interesting. What an admirable women!

Who would’ve thought she was a suffragette? It’s always the ‘quiet ones’ Patty! I love her crazy hat… in fact I like the whole composition. I just can’t quite equate the expression on her face with the word ‘fierce’… *grins*

Really great card, at first i thought she looked like a character in a novel I once read,(can’t remember title sadly) I think she must have had a very similar character and you can see it in her face, quiet, mature determination. Fantastic, really interesting creation..

Not only a beautiful card but I love that your blog highlights so that one can click on it and can learn about her and her role in women’s suffrage in the 1900’s. Great job Patty.

All I can say is thank heavens for women like this who were willing to stand up for our rights and who were persecuted as a result. It is so amazing to me that this really wasn’t that long ago. I love the strength of the piece. This wonderful woman deserves such a fitting tribute. Bravo, Patty!

Well Patty, I finally got to read a bit about this fine and gentle lady, and so amazing for her time. You did her proud with your selection and attention to detail. You always give us so much, a bit of history and art and new techniques, all rolled into one small entry. Well done dear friend.

Hi Patty, I posted a reply to you on my blog but was not sure you would see it. I remember well Northern Virginia in bloom. I grew up there…in Lorton and graduated from Mt. Vernon High. I’ve lived in Arlington, Alexandria, Stafford and Triangle. I miss the beauty of Virginia. I think what I miss the most (other than mountains) are the dogwoods in bloom.

I’ll be checking back on your blog to see the wonderful creations you come up with.

Congrats on the 300th post – you’ll be onto 400 before you know it.
