Rusty Heart

July 22, 2008 · 14 Comments

The Mixed Media Monday challenge is using “rust” in your creation. Oh, I was excited about this one. I have a file of close up photographs of rusty things. I like printing them out and using them as backgrounds……rust is good :)

This project began with a flat rusty metal heart. I punched holes in it so I could add the wire hanger and added a piece of distressed copper mesh at the bottom for a pocket. I made a couple of little cards to slip inside the pocket along with the posies wrapped in tuille and tied on a little key with some waxed linen thread. I folded the mesh a couple of times to make a smooth finish on the front edge and added an antique button.

The back is covered with torn paper pieces that I painted over with gold gouache. This helps hide the mesh edges that I wrapped around from the front to secure the pocket. I used the amazing terrifically tacky red line tape for this (great stuff).

Wire mesh is such a wonderful ingredient to play with. It rips like fabric after you nik it. Here you’ll also see the back of the little angel card.

Hearts are always a favorite of mine and I adore rust! I have some fabric pieces that I rusted a while back and would really like to make something using those.

Challenges like these really get you going, which is always exciting and so much fun!
