Chihuly – de Young

Thanks to a conversation with Jean before we left on our trip and her mention of Dale Chihuly, connected with a wonderful digital ATC she created, we happened to find out about and get tickets for two installations in San Francisco. Here are a few photos (we took loads of them) from the de Young exhibit. We spent hours there, looking, listening, ……savoring sights we do not get to see every day. Here is a photograph of the master at work.

Macchia Forest sampling

Glass Forest….you’ll notice in some of these photos the wonderful reflections that are presented in the displays…..it must take weeks to set up an installation of this size and detail.

Reeds on birch logs

and more boats

Persian Ceiling

Are you still with me :) the grand finale: Mille Fiori

And for anyone with several thousand dollars to spend, there were many wonderful selections in the gift shoppe. Here is one for $6,600.00, it’s called “Amethyst Persian”.

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park with Chihuly’s Saffron Tower.

Such bright colors and unusual shapes, truly wonderful. I specially liked “Mille Fiori”, which made me think of a coral reef with so many colors and the “seaweed” like shapes.

  7. I am jealous!! None of this was here, when we lived in CA!! I have always been a fan of his work – but have only seen it in books or on tv!! Lucky you!!! I hope he made some of those earthquake proof!!!

  9. All I can say is “wow”….what a delight to be able to share in some of the joys of your vacation with you thanks to your photos. I can relate to not being able to get your groove back after vacation. I’ve been feeling the same way. Perhaps your muse is still away!! I know mine has been. So glad you had a lovely time….and that you’re back.

  10. Great post. I’m a San Franciscan who became familiar with Chihuly while living in Seattle in the early 1990s, and it was great to see his work here in SF. My kids loved it, too!

  11. Beautiful, an art friend of mine turned me onto his work, she describes his stuff as “sweaty palm beautiful”, I must admit I agree. Thanks for sharing! I would have known of this exhibit if I had been a good girl and kept up with his website, http://chihuly.com, love your photos!!!
