summer unofficially begins in these parts … end of May … on the Memorial Day weekend …
it certainly feels like summer with a bit of relief in the shade … still 80+ degrees (27 celsius) at dusk
we have wanted to visit George and Martha Washington’s home for some time now (it so happens it is open seven days a week, each and every day of the year … even on Christmas Day)
… coming for one of the special sunset events was a great idea …

imagine our delight to discover “Martha” … with a lovely view of the Potomac River … chatting and stitching away on the porch … the hammer dulcimer and harp lilting lightly in the background

not sure where America’s first hero was
amazing really that it has taken us this long to get ourselves to Mount Vernon
wagon rides and lots of out buildings
a perfect place for lingering on the lawn
I told Mr Magpie we need never return as this visit was idyllic from beginning to end
seeing the estate by candle lit lantern light certainly was magical
here is a quote from the proud home owner himself:
“No estate in America is more pleasantly situated than this …” George Washington (1732 – 1799), speaking of his eight-thousand acre home. Mount Vernon has changed little over the last 200 years, although now it has been reduced to five hundred acres.

I was most impressed with the lovely view of the Potomac. I never realized how close his home was to the River.
Thank you for being such a great tour guide. It made for a very memorable visit for me, totally caught up in your photos. Hope you didn’t get too worn out from taking all these and walking the grounds. I can tell how special the trip was for you and Mr. M. Happy Memorial Day.
ok. I want this lady’s (Martha’s) job…
thank you for another portion of beauty.
I was there once with my husband a few years back; thank you for helping me relive the wonderful memory! Beautiful photos!xxoo
Your photos are lovely! We were just there on Friday! We go back often as I love to go down to the river and visit the sheep, oxen and roosters on the farm section of the estate. Someday we will cross paths….I hope.
Seriously. Is there no end to all the COOL places in your neck of the woods?!! How fun to get to visit…albeit vicariously through your generous sharing….ADORE the shadow photo…very special, Patty!
I have not been there since I was a child. We love historic places and that should be included on a future stop–thanks for including the super photos.
What a beautiful place! What was Martha stitching?
Oh, Patty! When I was a little girl, one of my favorite books was a guide book my aunt and uncle brought me from Mt. Vernon. I loved the beautiful rooms and all the photos so much! It’s a spot I would love to someday visit, but I feel a bit now as I’ve been there — and I think I’d be spoiled if it was for anything but a sunset visit!
Oh how awesome!!! I absolutely love the sunset photo!!!
