“Why Artists Need to Get High”

I found that Lesley’s Artist Success Feature Article  below explains a lot :)

I am not a drug-dealer, but I want you to get high. For real! I highly (pun intended) recommend that you turn on to the natural high that comes from making art. In 1972, brain researchers from Johns Hopkins University made a puzzling discovery. They found that the human brain’s neurons had specific receptor sites for opiate drugs: opium, heroin, codeine and morphine. I’m sure they were trying to understand the appeal and addiction of illegal and illicit drugs, but, thankfully, this finding led them to explore further. Why would nature give our brains a receptor for plant opiates?

They soon figured out that the active ingredient in all these opiates – morphine – had a chemical structure very similar to endorphins, a class of chemicals present in the brain. Endorphins are the natural opiates of the body and we have the opportunity to “get high” any time we want. It’s legal and, even better, it’s good for us. Athletes and runners have been aware of this for a while. You’ve heard of the runner’s high. Well, there is also an artist’s high.

I know you have experienced it. Recall how good you feel while taking a class or how the time just flies when you’re painting, choosing fabric for your next quilt or putting the patina on your mixed media altered book page. Perhaps that feeling comes when you’re working in your garden, redecorating a room or, better yet, teaching your granddaughter to sew.

Creating (and creating the flow of endorphins) is not always about making art. You can create a moment, a memory or an experience. The endorphins will flow when you are fully present in whatever you choose to do and when you choose to be aware of the joy you are creating.

Do you ever feel a letdown when you complete the project you were working on? That’s because you are coming down from your high. Are you tense and crabby when you can’t (or won’t) take the time to get in the studio? Lack of endorphins. How about that tightness in your neck, the empty feeling in your heart, the dull headache that just lingers? Lack of endorphins.

Endorphins are also naturally triggered in response to pain or stress but in today’s world, we often need a higher dose than our bodies produce. Many people choose or are advised to use other means of relieving pain and stress. Increasing the production of natural endorphins can help reduce or eliminate the needed level of prescription drugs. We are just now beginning to understand the effects of creativity and happiness on our overall health.

What You Can Do Now

To help me prove my point, I’m going to ask you to get high. It’s easy and, better yet, healthy and FUN. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Set aside a dedicated, uninterrupted time for the experiment. I recommend at least an hour. Set an alarm if you need to finish at a specific time.
  2. Choose a creative activity that you enjoy.
  3. Prepare in advance by locating and assembling everything you will need for this activity.
  4. Put on comfortable clothes & music if you like.
  5. Create. Create with abandon. Create towards a simple goal or for no reason at all. Just create.
  6. Be intentionally present in what you are doing. Don’t watch the clock or worry about time. Your alarm will signal if you have set it.
  7. Bask in the endorphin flow.

Rx – Use daily or as often as needed. There is no danger of overdose.

…I am just like me

“I am completely authentic. I don’t pretend to be what I am not. I am what I am, and I accept what I am. I am just like a flower, just like the ocean, just like the sun. I am just like me.”  ~Don Miguel Ruiz

reading that inspiration from Don Miguel Ruiz reminded me of my word of the year AUTHENTIC … on my sidebar …

here we are over half way through the year … I am finding out that it is pretty challenging being completely “authentic” all the time…

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

my art cave gets the morning sun and likes to hold on to the heat into the afternoon on these hot hot days …

even our nights have not been going below the 70′s (20+ celsius) lately…I certainly do NOT treasure the heat ;)

(left card: scrap papers, washi tape, paint, inks “Treasure” rubber stamp… right card: citrasolv background paper with black marker highlights…the card actually says “The HEAT wears me out”…but the ‘wears me out’ was lost in photo taking along with the lower border of the image…sunshine making trouble on our shady back porch too…my fav photo spot usually … images from Alicia’s Altered Bits collage sheet)

I have managed to get up in my art room and play a little with my pink index cards (or skinnies as they are also called) a few times …

(left card: my artwork transferred onto fabric and stitched onto scrap paper decorated with rubber stamping, rubons and fabric bits… right card: torn papers and dictionary page, paint and rubber stamping)

hard to make just one as one seems to lead to two more and so on…

(left card: some Sunday’s we split a salty and sweet caramel chocolate square with our coffee…it comes on a nice brown paper square that I always bring home…the bag is too good to waste too… right card: a piece of torn map from a trip to San Francisco inspired me on this card…we Love SF…a flower stamp seemed perfect too)

I work quickly on these using what I have on hand…

I sure do miss Wednesday Stamper…Wednesday’s are just not the same…

Over a Teacup @ Julieanna

lots to share with you today…

my long time friend Lennie and I headed far away from the city to meet up with two dear “old” friends and meet their two “new” friends…Julie and Susan … co owners of a really great shop and soon to be tea room in Broadway, Virginia…called Julieanna Over a Teacup

to find out more about the talented and energetic Susan and Julie…you can read an interesting article here with thanks to Lennie for the link…

they opened this sweet shop a couple of years ago … it is a classy blend of “something old and something new”…

the amazing canvas mural in the photo above was painted in 1901…the gals rescued it from a local small town theatre …

there were photo ops at every turn…co owner Julie designs gorgeous jewelry pieces…

our very own Pat of Ooglebloops has lots of her special upcycle pieces in the shop too…

with all the excitement and the heat I do not have any pics of Pat’s creations to show you (can you see my photos are a wee bit blurry too … the heat and I are not getting along!)

Pat arranged for us to have tea in the soon to be officially opened Over a Teacup tea room in the back of the shop…

in fact Pat surprised us by actually treating us to tea…how sweet and generous was that…

we oohed and aahed over the beautifully set table…no one sat down until we’d had a chance to snap some pics … and talk and talk…

fresh flowers…pretty linens and a gorgeous array of china pieces really got us going…

since we were among friends and all of a curious nature (you know inquiring minds and all) we read the bottoms of all the tea cups and got a good laugh about that and how it might not be acceptable in all circles…

we all obviously felt right at home at Julieanna’s with Susan and Julie’s pampering…

so many special touches…even handmade teacup pins as a surprise on each of our napkins…

Julie and Susan certainly outdid themselves on their “Celebrating Friends” menu for that scorching hot day…

starting with delicious Chilled Pear Soup…

the array of scrumptious tea sandwiches…Tomato Basil Rounds…Cucumber Sandwiches and Egg Salad Pinwheels…oh my…

the tea selection was extensive…

I enjoyed many cups of a delicate Lady Grey tea…

what would tea be without a scone…

a gorgeous Apricot Scone with Devonshire Cream no less…

and extra pretty paper doilies…

you know those had to come home for collage…

we almost needed to run laps around the table to fit in this last lovely treat…

Key Lime Trifle…

the perfect quote from the “Celebrating Friends” tea menu:

“Come, let us have some tea & continue to talk about happy things” ~Chaim Potok

what a delight it was from beginning to end…

many thanks to Julie and Susan for doing what they Love …they will be having their grand opening of the tea room this November…you can keep abreast of that here on their Facebook page…

next week I’ll show you the pretty new tea cup and saucer that I could not resist along with the goodies Pat, Judy, Lennie and I shared…

thanks as always for stopping by…

be sure and visit Kimmie at her Art in Red Wagons and of course stop by Pat’s for tea too and an update on the traveling tea cup

rust tea…

our cooler less humid air is gone for now and it is getting

hazy

HOT

and humid again…

typical Virginia weather for July…

the birds seem to linger longer in the birdbaths

trying to stay cool…

all of our sunshine has been just right for a recent rust project of mine…

it has been awhile since I played with rusting paper or fabric

with thanks to

Halle and Elizabeth and Dagmar

for lots of recent rusty inspiration…

here are some of the rusty things I used…

along with an old bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar to wet my fabrics…

it already looked a little like the color of rust with sediment in it…

these crocheted flowers were very white…

I wanted to add some color to them for an upcoming Queen Bee Honeycomb swap…

once you get started…

well you know how that goes…

( I wrung out the vinegar soaked fabric and wrapped and layered the pieces with the rusty bits…popped all of that into a plastic bag left to bask in the sun for the day…a final baking soda and water rinse and your fabric is ready to go)

one thing leads to another …

and another…

and…

be sure to pop over and visit Kimmie

you never know where the group of international Tea Tuesday posters may lead you … Enjoy * Enjoy

make time to play…

there is fun buzz in the blogosphere about the index card a day project (ICAD)…along with SO much creativity…

Dianne and Terri are a couple of artists that greatly inspired me with their index cards…

while I do not plan to participate in the challenge daily necessarily…

I do enjoy a good challenge and having a chance to play…

at first I could only find the larger size of index card in my stash and ended up with a postcard size creation…

a sweet surprise package from my dear bloggie friend Suz provided the perfect crepe paper ruffle…

I just knew I needed to use that in something special using one of my favorite vintage postcard ladies as a TAP transfer on fabric…

a little stitching…some vintage velvet ribbon…lace bits and more and it was complete…

I save all of the papers that protect my table top from glue … rubber stamping ink and paint … they make perfect backgrounds …

some 3 x 5″ cards did surface in a recent studio cleanup so I got busy…no matter that they were pink to start out with…

a new tin of Cavallini animal stickers made a nice focal point for my first couple of cards…

I do see more index cards in my future…it is a perfect way to use up scraps and what you have handy on your work table without a huge time commitment…

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” ~Plato

“what do U see”… boys to men

my second smooshed tin is in from our local altered arts group…

each of my collage packs had different male images and tea tag quotes  in them…

Linda Yeatman told me she was waiting for the little boy in the packet she got to speak to her and that he took his time…

I certainly am tickled with what “he” had to say…

the details on this piece are fabulous…

front and

back…

photo sizing was not quite working for me today so these are larger than life but with a great view of the layers Linda Yeatman created…

thanks to the Queen Bees (links on my sidebar) for being the original inspiration for the “what do U see” swap idea

OXO

July local “what do U see”…girls just wanna have fun…

Fran Podlesney’s cereal box tag called me this month from her bag of goodies…

I decided to go a little different way with her china doll image (not quite 5.5″ tall 13.97cm) by scanning it and printing out three smaller versions (each about 3″ tall 7.62cm)…

I was pleased with how the yellow and green ‘ruffle’ turned out at the bottom…

that was a piece of paper towel that Fran had wrapped a tiny glass bottle in…

the dotted pattern of the towel showed up nicely when inked…

I cut the string of “pearls” apart and put them in the glass bottle sealing the top with string and beeswax…

I added some pretty dotted fabric from my stash to the back of the tag…

can’t wait to see all of Fran’s tags together …

les filles veulent s’amuser = girls just wanna have fun in every language

also can’t wait to show you the wonderful smooshed tin Linda Yeatman made for me

“what do U see”: When I Grow Up

my first creation for our local “what do U see” swap was Linda Yeatman’s soft wood piece using ingredients from her packet below:

I got busy staining the wood front and back with watered down paints...

layering them again and again…stamping along the edges…

it is always a thrill when you stumble across the perfect piece for a project…I just happened to have the metal bit I attached at the bottom close at hand…

it had broken off an agate dish when we were packing up my Mom’s things…it was waiting for a new home…

I was happy to layer the rusty wide mouth cap I had with Linda’s bingo piece and thought the patina I added to the shiny copper worked out well for the look I was after on the back too…

as a last touch I colored the back of the metal you see sticking out left and right at the bottom with a Krylon pen…didn’t get to snap a photo of it after that…

I was happy with the pieces I used from Linda’s supply…

that was for June and here it is July already…I am busy on the second round for our local “what do U see” swap which will be revealed soon…

July 2011 in Photos…always lots to learn

being a heart on my sleeve kinda girl…I oftentimes show the whole/big picture…

here is an example…

for Day 5 of the July 2011 in Photos Challenge

the prompt was “In your refrigerator”

I imagined a photo with carrots and their greens still attached…beautiful beets…corn in their husks…which is how our fridge can look sometimes…

but here is what I came up with for my one photo…

just ONE photo is a very good challenge by the way…

a note/comment on my flickr image from an artsy photographer really got me thinking…

if I hadn’t wanted to show so much…

my photo could have been cropped to look like this…

or as suggested by mythicalbuzzard who said “this is a pic in itself”… below…

that was the part of my photo that I liked best from the start…with the onion keeper reflected inside the fridge…

so much to learn…for some great photo inspiration you can visit the Flickr July 2011 in Photos here
