Carcassonne is a beautiful fortified French town and a UNESCO World Heritage site…
during the 3rd century A.D. a curtain wall was built and parts remain today…
building began in the 12th and 13th centuries of “La Cité” as it is also called with 53 towers strung together by two enormous concentric walls…
here is a UNESCO quote about this ancient walled “city”:
“Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral. Carcassonne is also of exceptional importance because of the lengthy restoration campaign undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation.”
we were excited that there was a planned overnight stay within the ancient walls…
and the traveling tea cup had a nice view from our second story window…
at night the fortress took on another kind of charm…
the next day we were headed to the Midi-Pyrénées region in southwest France to visit Lourdes…

I used torn pieces of peeled napkin for the starry sky… a photo that I took along with computer generated words and the Carcassonne medieval coat of arms…

An amazing old town and you could sleep inside there in an wonderful hotel.Your journey manager did an excellent job. Your nice photos invite us to visit this famous place too. The journal pages are also well done, good idea to choose a night shot.

I love how you have used that fabulous night shot for your journal page! As you know, Carcassonne is one of the places we have planned for next year – and I think we may have found our hotel too! It has taken me a while to catch up this morning as I have been showing Tony along the way – Hadn’t realised I was so far behind!! What amazes me is how many more cities you visited than Paris. I was incredibly impressed with both the photos and the art you created for AJJ, too. The traveling tea cup got some fairly good views, too. Erika’s theme fit in quite well this month, didn’t it?
I was overwhelmed by the scale of those walls, and the incredible towers, too. I didn’t realize until after you shared where you stayed that it was truly a city and not just an old fortress. It’s simply incredible.

OMG!!!! To stay behind the walls in this ancient town is a dream come true for sure!! You really took my breath away with your pictures and your journal spread. One of my favorite photos is that one with the tea cup and then seeing the old grave yard through the hole in the ward. Great photo!!
