tea and friendship in my garden…

Organic India is a favorite tea company of ours for lots of reasons… in each box of tea they include a little product booklet which I always feel a bit bad about chucking into the recycle bin when the box is empty…Organic India info

so I decided to create a small journal by gluing some pages together…Patty Szymkowicz Tea & Friendship gesso

and adding some heavy gesso to help give the slippery pages some tooth…Magpie's Nest tea journal side view

with no real plan other than a focus on tea and friendship…

Magpie's Nest T Journal 1&2

for the first pages I used a scrap of Neal’s Yard tissue paper from our 2013 trip to the UK along with a piece of security envelope… one of my favorite swans and some star tissue…

Magpie's Nest T Journal 3 & 4

a tea stamp on tissue paper with a tea pot and cup catalog cut out…Magpie's Nest T Journal 5 & 6

coffee advert with old music sheet snippet which happens to have the #3 on it which is fitting for the recent T Stands for Tuesday anniversary…

Magpie's Nest T Journal 7 & 8

NYPL Japanese tea ladies with citra solv paper scraps and pieces of torn paper parasol…

Magpie's Nest T Journal 9 & 10

assorted blue clip art and a US postage stamp as a finish…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz tea journal cover

the cover of the book is from my paper collection and the cup is a wooden cut out that I colored with a gold Krylon pen… the tassel and gold fringe helped pull it all together…

joining Art Journal Journey’s IN MY GARDEN there is challenge and wishing everyone over at Elizabeth’s T Stands for Tuesday a Happy T Day…

  12. This is a lesson in mixed media, collage, and altered art all thrown into one. I kept thinking how you must have some incredible images and books to draw from because each page is an experience to behold. Yes, I’m impressed.

I was out most of the evening and got home very late. In my mailbox was an envelope with your name on the return address. I am off to open it after I visit everyone. Before I do that, thanks for this. You should NOT have done this. I really did NOT want anything, But I DO love the Hawaiian shirt postage stamp, because I found a rubber stamp that is very similar.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tea inspired book with us for T this Tuesday. It should be mandatory reading and studying for anyone interested in mixed media.

  24. Patty, you are really rocking with your art, such amazing work you are creating.
Organic tea – yes, when you find how they make ordinary tea, seeking out organic makes such a lot of sense.
I know what you mean about these little books, we get all sorts of little books with so many things – festival programs, advertising and so on, and it seems such a pity to waste them – I have a little pile of them growing.
And then after all this interesting reading, a description of how to make an art book and then all of your pages!!!!!
Great idea to gesso the pages first.
And yes, the Neal’s Yard tissue paper is always lovely, in that (your) shade of blue, too pretty to throw away. I love the blue page with the swan, and the pages with the bird and the music and the beautiful top and bottom papers, especially the bottom papers.
What a great blogpost this is.

  28. Oh my goodness Patty, what an adorable booklet you have created! It has so many wonderful pages I don’t know where to start. The details on each page are just perfect, from the serenity of the Swan, the joyfulness of the tea and teacups, the singing of the little bird, the pretty parasols in Japan and the wonderful celebration of friendship! I love it, thanks for making me smile and the inspiration! Happy belated T Day! J 🙂
