…a couple of kids…

with September whizzing by I did not want to miss the chance to join in with Elizabeth’s fun theme of BACK TO SCHOOL over at Art Journal Journey…

magpies-nest-early-pages

while clearing and organizing I have had lots of ideas on the theme and finally took some time to play…magpies-nest-butterfly-atc

not sure how I know this Will Cobb/Gus Edwards song exactly but I couldn’t get the chorus out of my head… that along with an ATC I created some time ago were my inspiration…

magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-when-we-were-a-couple-of-kids

here is some of what went into this spread:  it began with spray painted book pages… stenciling with super heavy gesso… adding bits of monoprint paper, forget-me-not origami paper and deli print paper used to clean up the plastic doily used for stenciling along with some computer generated words on the right… the white flower trim was something that surfaced in my clean up as well

“School days, school days Dear old golden rule days Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic Taught to the tune of the hickory stick You were my queen in calico I was your bashful barefoot beau And you wrote on my slate, “I love you, Joe” When we were a couple of kids.”

  3. This is a really unique and clever entry for AJJ, Patty. It was so fun to see your take on this theme, and how lovely the spread came together in the end.

From the looks of things, your craft room is looking very organized. I hope we get to get a tour one of these days. Thanks again for this lovely AJJ entry. It’s very different from any I’ve seen in the past.

  4. Such a beautiful page, the stenciled background and colours you have chosen are gorgeous! I love that you used nature in this piece as well, I know how you love it so! When I look at this piece it feels very nostalgic, it’s like I’m stepping back in time – breathtaking! Glad you were able to join in the fun at AJJ! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! J 🙂

  5. Just read your comment about not knowing what a timpani is. Some people call them kettle drums, and if you have ever been to a symphony, I’m sure you’ve seen or heard them. They are always in the very back row along with other percussion instruments. They can be tuned to various tones depending on the size of the “drum.”

  9. Beautiful page Patty. It feels like the back to school season, seeing the skies in September get such a clear sharp blue once the humidity leaves. Although we did have some last week, but now it is crisp and like October. I’ll take this, and I am ready for it. Your free lending library piece back a few months ago inspired my page today. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  10. I really love your AJJ page Patty! The background is just gorgeous.
I think song lyrics getting stuck in one’s head is creativity screaming to get out as it usually leads to creating “something” just to get rid of it…LOL!

Thanks for the visit and leaving me a comment.

  12. A beautiful background you created with the sprays and after stenciling, dear friend. Also wonderful adds of lovely papers, and the butterfly piece is gorgeous, fitting right in with the forget -me-nots and turquoise tones. The white paper string “frames” it so lovely. Beautiful spread and sentence from the song, which I don`t know. But it takes me many years back 🙂
Hugs to you, -wonderful to see you again, already. xoxoxo
