Christmas in July and Celebration T…

this month’s turn of our local altered book round robin gave me a chance to get in the Christmas spirit thanks to my friend Fran’s Christmas themed tip in (more about tip ins here)…

Magpie's Nest Tip in backgrounds

I began by collaging various shades of white paper and old plastered book text onto the front and back of a sturdy piece of watercolor paper (6.50 x 9.75″)…

Magpie's Nest glitter highlights

it was also a chance to get out the glitter to highlight the snow and icicles on a reused greeting card…

Magpie's Nest glitter highlights

some peel and stick plastic icicles worked out nicely over and under the window…

Magpie's Nest Stille Nacht

with the first side complete I got busy on the reverse side where I also used part of an old greeting card adding trims and computer generated words…

the postage stamp from my collection fits in with Art Journal Journey’s July “Post & Postage” challenge

Magpie's Nest Peace on Earthin preparation for our son’s visit home we have been sorting and clearing like crazy which is long overdue here and it was fun how many Christmas bits of this and that appeared so I put them in a basket with Fran’s tip in in mind (and let’s face it in the big scheme of things Christmas will be here again before we know it) …

Hotel Monaco Staircase Traveling T Cup

Configurations Box Round Robin…

our local Mixed Media Collaborative group is in the midst of a fun round robin…

Patty S Gypsy Boxes Before

each of us purchased a 6.75 x 8.75 inch Tim Holtz Configurations box chosing individual themes for our boxes adding bits of this and that to be used in the box or not … making a commitment to deliver at least one finished box per month beginning in June (our free spirited altered arts group does best with as few rules as possible)…

Patty S boxes ready

since I missed last month’s get together I have two finished boxes ready to deliver this month…

Patty S for Andrea

Andrea (or Drea) as some of her friends call her has a “Nature” theme and the bag of goodies she sent my way was marked “Wings”

Patty S for Andrea (1)

her only special request was to not use anything plastic so I added a little twig nest, some moss, a wooden egg and glass flower from my stash along with a pair of Cicada wings she included in a jar lining the box with some of the napkin she included (a bit tricky photographing her box to show those gossamer wings toward the back of the nest)

Patty S for Susan G

next was Susan‘s Vintage White (Pastel) Christmas theme and  I added one of my little bleached trees along with a bauble from a vintage bead strand I treated myself to last Christmas, some aqua colored netting from a vintage petticoat and a frill that I made thanks to Fran in our group for sharing her die cut machine and dies…

Patty S for Susan G (1)

I wanted to add so many things but seeing that these boxes only measured 2 x 3 inches each there was only so much I could tuck in there trying to remind myself that less would be more…

Patty S Gypsy Boxes Before (2)

I chose a “Gypsies” theme for my boxes which goes so well with my Love of travel and exploring…

Patty S Gypsy Boxes Before (1)

I included some sari pieces from a purse of mine that fell apart along with some scraps of map for players to use or not when they worked on my boxes…

Swap boxes still left

above are the remaining boxes for me to play with in the coming months…

I am sure there are many people who struggle during the holidays as it is not always a jolly and fun time for everyone (little did I know when I wrote that sentence)

Something Creative Every DayI hope that your holidays are meaningful leading up to a great new year…

Twinkle collage

and that you *feel the twinkle* in this season of Love…

the quote I had selected earlier does not feel quite like it felt a week ago considering all those in horrific shock and pain … after 13 years of intense grief work the quote is meaningful to me … this is the second Christmas without my Mother and we have not quite settled into being orphans for the holidays

Linda Yeatman has a real eye for treasure and altered a squished drink can decorating it with great details on both sides “Imagine” and “Dream”

Lisa Murphy

Lisa Murphy created a bird made with punched out and decorated metal from recycled cans with a precious round crown and more…

Susan Godby

Susan Godby wool felted her bird head and body giving it layers of glitter edged vintage map paper for wings and a frill collar “Joy to the World”

Magpies Nest Altered Spoon Ornament

I had taken a photo of the back of my spoon before our get together and it shows a bit of the pretty silver pattern on the folded over handle…

Patty Szymkowicz

the spoon was flattened and bent by Mr Magpie …

I added a favorite Graphics Fairy Bobolink bird image and several different kinds of glitter along with one of my handmade wire birds nests with some found golden trim for the hanger (the trim shown better in the first photo at the top of this post was something I found on the ground outside a craft store and knew our group of altered artists would appreciate that I rescued it and gave it a new life)…

wish you could hear the details of what all went into each creation from the artists themselves as there is so much more to tell…

we enjoyed some delicious food and friendship and have an exciting line up of things planned for the new year

*I joined in on Karen of the the Graphics Fairy Brag Monday today hereI am #38*
