Mix it Monthly February PLAY WITH FABRIC

bookworking in a local art friend’s fashion themed altered book was the perfect time to play with some fabric and paint for this month’s challenge over at Conny’s Mix it Monthly…

connys lady fishnet stockings

I had an image of fishnet stockings and a little black dress in mind but when I got up to my work table finding bits left from an altered candy tin I created the other day things quickly turned teal/turquoise and gold along with the image of a lovely lady that Conny had shared in January

background

wanting to strengthen the pages of the 1938 book a bit I added a thin coat of gesso and then decided to tear strips of scrap paper for interest and stability also adding acrylic inks and paint…

embroidered fabric

I had fun creating a new dress for the lady using pieces of tattered embroidery from a junk shoppe along with lace for the bodice…

trying things on for size

my bottle of Golden’s Iridescent Gold is getting used up…

pgs before stamping

the bit at the top on the right hand page is an original part of the  lady’s dress…it helped highlight a favorite fashion quote from Gilda Radner which speaks for me and most of my fashion preferences…

PaperArtsy Prizes I won

I got to use one of the PaperArtsy stamps from the prize I recently won that just arrived from England (lots more fun to be had with those!!!)…

PaperArtsy Script Stamp

the French text helped add interest and texture to the pages along with a bit of gesso and black around the edges…

Patty Szymkowicz pages for Linda S

using gel medium to add some metal snaps helped finish the fabric skirt AND thank you Valerie I had birds on my mind and forgot humans also qualify for this months Art Journal Journey’s BIRDS BEASTS & HUMANS challenge

old maps are always a favorite ingredient (I made these watching Project Runway on TV)...

little dresses …

if you are a paper Lover this is something you may enjoy…

I am having way too much fun making little origami dresses...

it is impossible to make just one and I am not even sure what I will do with them exactly…

you know how it is when you just “have to” make something…

I do think they would be great on cards … as ornaments to hang or strung to make a bunting … so many possibilities…

next I am going to get busy using more old book pages…

I will be away until early next week when I look forward to catching up with you all…

see you in September oxo

…good enough

while clearing out some old catalogs I came across the image of a chair in front of the window and a lady in her flowing turquoise dress…

the words “I AM GOOD ENOUGH” have been pinned to my inspiration board for a very long time…

the images and words came together nicely for this spread…

a piece of coral ruffled fabric on my work table added nice texture and interest to my pages…

along with rub ons …

some liquid pencil, acrylic paint and inks…

a little rubber stamping and black and white doodle pen accents…

thanks to Sandy in Germany for the butterfly inspiration

I have been playing in this Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia made into an art journal since March of 2009

there is a little more room to go until my journal is filled…

here are some of my pages…

if you click on one and keep clicking it will take you to the next and the next…

it is fun to see most of my pages in one spot here instead of scattered on various blog posts…

also want to share this  from StoryPeople

Dress Up – December * fa la la

Margaret’s very popular monthly Dress Up challenge is drawing to a close…twelve months with so many people sharing their fabulous and original dress creations…

December is a month of celebrations…so I thought an ankle length party dress would be nice…

I began with a scraped paint book page…added some chiffon trim on elastic at the neck and waist and THEN decided some stitching would be nice…not much planning…just playing…

I scored a wonderful old vintage navy blue hat with a velvet ribbon and gorgeous flowers in various sizes…

some posies from that were the perfect touch for Mindy’s party dress…

here we have January through June…

with July through December…

when I began the Dress Up challenge…I had the trunk…but Mindy…as I named her…the paper doll did not surface until October…the real magic was that the dress template I used fit her perfectly…imagine that…

Mindy’s trunk is overflowing…

many thanks to Margaret and all those that played along and made it so much fun each and every month of 2010 …

I see I will need to add a little liner to the inside top of Mindy’s trunk … it looks a bit bare and wanting in these photos…always fun what you notice on the big screen…fa la la

Dress Up – November * Tree of Life

amazing that we are at the eleventh dress in Margaret’s year long Dress Up challenge already …

I was inspired by a favorite artist … Gustav Klimt … his style is so distinctive…

here is my Mindy doll wearing her newest “tree of life” dress …

I even had the perfect piece of colorful bling to accent the gold ribbon at her waistline …

I sketched the tree design on 140 lb watercolor paper that was lightly washed with walnut ink …working with different paints and metallic markers …going back again and again adding pencil lines…the final Klimt touch was of course GOLD … I find the Krylon pens can be a bit tricky … first they do not want to flow and all of a sudden you can end up with a blop of ink on your page … I added the gold touches with great caution …

I decided not to alter Mindy’s trunk … it has such a great old patina to it…the little doll trunk and paper doll are not related in any way…Mindy was an 8 inch (20.32 cm) tall doll from the 1950’s that I cannot seem to find a picture of to show you on the internet … my paper doll measures about 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall … in December I will show you all of the dresses in one post…if you’d like to see dresses from past months there is a search feature on my sidebar … near the top is a blank space under the words “Looking for Something” … type in a word or two and related posts on my blogblogblog will come up…I find that to be a handy tool…

Dress Up – October * Poe

finally my October Dress is out of my head and ready for Margaret’s Dress Up Challenge this month

it began with a piece of red polka dot tissue paper that Katie wrapped some lovely gifts in for me earlier this year …

Edgar Allan Poe was also my inspiration…

a piece of beautiful black lace that Marit in The Netherlands surprised me with was begging to be used …

just look at the lovely treasures she sent to me just for playing along in a recent journaling challenge…she teaches some really inspiring on line journaling workshops … you can get info on the latest one here…it starts soon…

look what I found while looking for something else … I picked up this paper doll some time ago and forgot about her…

it just so happens that most of the dresses I created this year for Margaret’s challenge fit her PERFECTLY … I could not have planned it better…isn’t that fun!!!

and here she is wearing her newest October dress

Dress Up – September * Swan Song

a new month … time for Margaret’s Dress Up challenge

my September dress was going to be a little black dress … with thoughts of blackboards and such in my head …

until … I added the swan … and before I knew it … pieces of an old lace curtain … a precious gift from a special friend … layered here and there with gel medium … with one white feather …

speaking of precious gifts … special friends and swans … just look at these beautiful and thoughtful treasures … can’t wait to try the Green Tea with Lemon …

a most unique swan made of metal and glass … just imagine an elegant table set with salt cellars like this one … I have never seen anything like it ever before … thank you sweet Jean

nine dresses and counting

Dress Up – August

playing with paints led me to my dress this month … Mr Magpie described it as diaphanous … as much as paper and paint can be … I keep having 3D ideas for my dresses but decided to keep it flat this month …

with  lots of layers of paint and gesso … a little rubber stamping and some painted lace trim with waxed linen for a sash …

another month of fabulous creativity over at Margaret’s Alice and Camilla Dress Up … so much imagination and talent there …

WordPress Sidebar Update:  Yippee … Like magic all of the links reappeared on my sidebar this morning … earlier this week things went a bit wonky for me … now all I have to do is sort out the duplicate bits … I really was lost without all of my links!

I have been pretty happy with WP for the most part … they would be close to perfect if they offered the cool updated blog link feature that other blog providers have 😉

Note: my book giveaway ends Sunday … pop on by if you are interested

Dress Up – July…Put on Your Party Dress

my dress this month is not at all what I had originally envisioned … stamped with three different rubber stamps

* someone said they had been looking for wire clip hangers … they can be found here *

ART Helps Me Breathe” is one of my all time favorite stamps …

the bling on the bodice is a clip on earring from my India collection box … I ordered the  little bells  here a while ago

part of me wants to edge the bodice with ink … might just leave it alone for now … enough fiddling already 😉

here are my dresses from January through June …

be sure and pop by Margaret’s blog this month to see the many imaginative and creative dresses from all over the globe
