nature’s wonders

NATURE’S WONDERS is Gill’s theme for Art Journal Journey this month…Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Passion Flower

oh how I enjoy nature and always have growing up in a household with parents that honored and preserved nature as much as possible…Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz lotus collagemy father was known to have annual feuds with sparrows that were relentless in their attempts to build nests in his Purple Martin houses… he cared alot about the Purple Martins who were great at eating mosquitoes returning faithfully to the garden each year…

Magpie's Nest Red Rosin Monoprint Journal Cover

I created two more pages in my red rosin monoprinted journal

Magpie's Nest BLOOM supplies Lynne Perrella

PaperArtsy’s lovely Lynne Perrella stamps were fun to play with adding another favorite Tin Can Mail butterfly wing stamp for the background..

Magpie's Nest Bloom right page

it was a bit of a challenge to incorporate one of my 5 x 5 collages onto my already monoprinted pages trying to match the paints I used earlier…Magpie's Nest Bloom left

the final touch was adding some pressed flowers using matte medium under and over them on the pages with a couple of rubons too…

I like how the words I used in all of the spreads flow like a bit of found “poetry”… they evolved after working randomly with no  theme for my journal (all it needs now is binding and a cover):

Keep moving forward…

Happiness…

Keep close to nature’s heart…

Pull Love closely around you and snuggle into its bliss…

What we think we become…

Wonder…

The present moment is a powerful goddess…

Bloom

 -Patty Szymkowicz

tell me everything…

being in a house with all males for years (Mr Magpie and three sons) I have had to learn how to get them talking… not sure if this is a female or male thing exactly…

Patty & Jim Turks & Caicosall I know is when the boys would come home from school if I asked them “how was your day?” I would most likely get a one word answer… so I came up with questions like “what was the funniest thing that happened today?” and it was amazing sometimes what all was revealed…

Patty Szymkowicz Tell Me Everything

the found poetry on my gesso journal page along with one of my moo cards brought that all to mind…

Patty Szymkowicz Tell Me Everything journal pages

two more pages for AJJ’s “Masculine/Feminine” and Mix-it-Monthly’s “The Facial Profile”

Patty Szymkowicz Tell Me

and I am joining in with Moo Mania and More for their “Numbers” challenge...

the glint of the rising moon…

two posts in one day and three challenges in one post…

all I can say is it is nice and warm in my art cave cause baby it’s cold outside…

swan closeup

my initial inspiration was to use a beautiful swan postage stamp that I have had for some time (wish I could remember where I got it) and then one thing led to another with bits from my paper stash ..

faux resin paper

I recently tried this technique for making resin like paper  using thin book pages…an iron and beeswax…

papersit was easy and I was delighted to find that I could adhere torn pieces of waxed text with glue stick…

found poetry

some found poetry which was revealed after coats of gesso and paint had been added to the journal page also helped to inspire me…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz glint of the rising moon

this spread is for the Moo Mania CIRCLES challenge (the Seven Wonders lady on the right started out as a moo that grew a bit with the addition of papers)

crown headand my swan and lady also qualify for the AJJ BIRDS BEASTS & HUMANS challenge

possible cover for gesso journal

since it is about time to be thinking about a cover for my bulging gesso journal I am considering adding a metal ATC that I have been working on which fits in nicely with Conny’s Mix it Monthly PLAY WITH FABRIC challenge as it has plastered lace and ribbon trim

promise…

Susi’s Art Journal Journey May challenge theme is to “Challenge Yourself” (all are most welcome to join along each month)...

Painted and stenciled pgs (1)

my challenge began with two painted and stenciled pages that I made just because I wanted to play with some replacement dabbers and my favorite distress stains (I missed the opportunity to snap a photo of my beginning pages as my camera always seems to be downstairs)…

some supplies (1) I also enjoyed stenciling with some extra thick gesso to give texture and interest to my book pages…

Painted and stenciled pgs

I had no specific plans for what else I would be doing to these plain painted pages until I uncovered a wonderful Paper Whimsy image sheet on my work table…

Prayers Fell Like Rain (1)

I started with the right hand page brushing several coats of soft gel medium onto the little girl distressing with a sanding block along the way…

Paper Whimsy Girls

repetition is something I enjoy while creating so I carried the strip of three images over to the left hand page and before I knew it they ended up being speak no evil…hear no evil and see no evil…

some supplies

I altered a white paper doily rescued from a recent tea outing with a sweet friend of mine using colors that would blend in with my painted pages…

Prayers Fell Like Rain (2)

then I let words pop off the pages of some book text that was also handy and my pages began to really come together…

Butterfly Lace

adding the lace at the bottom was a nice way to connect the pages and compliment the lace in the girl’s collar …

Vintage Hat

tiny posies snipped from a vintage hat were the finishing touch to some of my favorite green leaf ribbon that you may have seen me use before

Prayers Fell Like Rain (3)I continue to be thrilled by the challenges of beginning with plain book pages …

letting the ideas come and flow as I go creating something I could have never planned beforehand …

thank you for visiting and letting me share my excitement with you which is exactly why I started blogging back in the fall of 2007 …

* Happy May *

she had come this way…

if you remember my journal pages from last week here

my old friend (3) A

you will recognize the veiled lady…

Blessed left side

I folded her image from one page to another rather than tearing it in half…Blessed right side leftover found poetry that I played with back in July came in handy for these pages too…Blessed Journal Pages

soon I will need to make more pressed flower tissue papers

STRETCH in 2013 …

new year’s resolutions are not something I really get into but I have chosen a word for the last several years…

in 2011 my word was AUTHENTIC and

in 2012 I chose BALANCE

Balance Rock altered

I could easily have had that as my word again this year but I decided to go with

2013 Word of the Year STRETCH A

(most of the heart rocks are from my Mr Magpie who knows I enjoy a pretty rock as much as a bouquet of flowers)

a reminder to stretch my spiritual body…

 my physical body…

and

to continue stretching my wings trying new things

Swan Wings from Susan

(thank you Susan for the beautiful wings…they fit perfectly with my new AVAM swan)

here are my latest art journal pages for two different monthly journal challenges Susi’s with the theme of “Crowns” and Dawn’s with the theme of “New” using colors that I don’t often go to…

my old friend (3) A

my encyclopedia pages (each measuring 4×6″/postcard size) began with some found poetry that eerily and unintentionally lined up with words showing thru my painted and collaged backgrounds on page 213 and 214…

my old friend A

did you pick a word to inspire you this year?

A BIG thank you once again to my sweet and talented friend Estivalia in Chile for creating the code for my Word of the Year to appear on my sidebar…she’s the best!!!

Quirky Dutch Summer #3

Marit’s challenge and inspiration last week was all about “Word Play/Met woorden spelen” …

time seems to be moving at warp speed and I am one week behind…

found poetry is something I really enjoy and it is always surprising how words will pop off the page and find you…

a favorite book to use is Simple Abundance but this time I copied pages from Mists of Avalon which is a great escape book and fabulous read…

to find the words for my altered poems I let my eyes float across the lines of the page noticing which words pop out at me not trying too hard at all to make it happen…

I circle any words that interest me and then see how they flow together…

here are a couple of examples from two different pages…

“my old friend wakes and cries in the night

she had come this way

blessed

forgetting face

and lips

and faded hair”

and another …

“cloak wrapped tight

the messenger captured her memory

her bones

her eyes

concealed within that veil

the answer

hidden in the unyielding sky”…

back in the fall of 2009 I was lucky enough to take some super on line classes with Julie Prichard (which she still offers btw)

that is how long these blue monoprint pages have been waiting for me…

kinda felt like they were too nice to cover up…

my art cave was calling me today especially with it being crazy three digit hot outside so I got busy…

the dramatic feel of my found words really inspired me…

along with the perfect piece of pretty golden sari ribbon and other golden bits

having background pages ready certainly helped move along my creative process…

you can click here if you would like to see other pages in this art journal

*sorry I do not know who to give credit to for the lady image*
