using colors I don’t often use was a good exercise but my background pages sat for awhile until the other bits presented themselves…magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-girls-with-stars-in-her-hair

this year I wanted to create a January Art Journal to help me through this bumpy time… turns out I am feeling like I’ve turned a bit of a corner with lightness and joy and many more bright days than dark (extremely grateful for that!!!)…magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-turn-into-art-right-side

“The French called this time of day ‘l’heure bleue’.  To the English it was ‘the gloaming.’ The very word ‘gloaming’ reverberates, echoes – the gloaming, the glimmer, the glitter, the glisten, the glamour – carrying in its consonants the images of houses shuttering, gardens darkening, grass-lined rivers slipping through the shadows…..” –Joan Didion

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Pere LaChaise Cemetery 2formerly called Cemetery of the East it is the largest park and cemetery in the city of Paris on 110 acres with about 5,000 trees…

Magpie's Nest Edith Piaf's gravethere were views of the Eiffel Tower and the Montparnasse Tower with the help of our telephoto lens (we also found France’s beloved Edith Piaf’s grave)…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Pere LaChaise mosaic“The cemetery’s hilly terrain and tree-lined avenues are at once overcrowded, peaceful, and seductive. Sculptures abound, and the tombs run the gamut from simple, flat, horizontal headstones to elaborate mini-chapels open to the public. Some of the tombs are immaculately cared for, others dilapidated and abandoned.” –Encyclopedia Britannica

happy to be back on line after an involuntary absence because of Mr M trying to upgrade our computer…

Patty Szymkowicz Thyme Lady and Mr Cardinalthe word “nightmare” sums up that experience pretty well as the new set up was impossible to deal with and very frustrating…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Garden blueswe are now back where we started with a slow computer that can at least be used…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Paris cup I am also sharing two new art journal pages for the Moo Mania and More  PARIS theme…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Paris Je t'aimeI had fun filling the cup with some favorite Paris images decorating with part of a coffee stained paper doily and fabric flowers on a peeled flower napkin over old French text background (Notre Dame was from a French chocolate wrapper, the lady is from The Graphics Fairy, the image on the left is one of Da Vinci’s hand drawings)

winter white…

the recent blizzard had me in such a state of excitement I could not focus on much other than snow… taking photos… cooking… baking… admiring nature… watching the birds and snow…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Felting ingredients

I did sit down at my felting machine and played with assorted fabrics and fiber scraps along with some used tea bag papers…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz machine felting TAP transferthe step by step photos were taken at night with just the light in my sewing nook so they appear a bit darker than real life…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz TAP Transferthe first piece has a TAP image of a young girl hand stitched as the focal point embellished with flowers from a vintage hat and some extra lace and trims (I felt kind of brave cutting into my old doll’s wedding dress with its soft satin underlining…the doll is long gone)…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Machine felted dress formusing the felting machine is really fun and very freeing with no bobbin or thread to worry about…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz White Buttons

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Love is the soul's Light Rumi

the lovely girl with flowers in her hair is a favorite image that I’ve had for a long time from a magazine and the black bird, butterfly wings and roses at the bottom are from a collage sheet that Misty Mawn shared in one of her on line workshops…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Rumi Quote

lots of layers of gesso, black Stabilo pencil and white Signo gel pen along with a little honey comb stamping around the edges (I really wanted to give her rosy cheeks!)…

tell me everything…

being in a house with all males for years (Mr Magpie and three sons) I have had to learn how to get them talking… not sure if this is a female or male thing exactly…

Patty & Jim Turks & Caicosall I know is when the boys would come home from school if I asked them “how was your day?” I would most likely get a one word answer… so I came up with questions like “what was the funniest thing that happened today?” and it was amazing sometimes what all was revealed…

Patty Szymkowicz Tell Me Everything

the found poetry on my gesso journal page along with one of my moo cards brought that all to mind…

Patty Szymkowicz Tell Me Everything journal pages

two more pages for AJJ’s “Masculine/Feminine” and Mix-it-Monthly’s “The Facial Profile”

Magpie's Nest Red Rosin Monoprint pagesthanks to my friend Jan for sharing a John Muir quote which was the inspiration for my latest red rosin monoprint page…

Magpie's Nest beginning page

the flower is from a book page showing the parts of a flower (I liked how it complimented the green of my mono printed pages)…

Magpie's Nest nature rubber stamps

I used some of my new plastered paper which was done over a page from a small phone book (paper phone books are almost a thing of the past here)…

Magpie's Nest John Muir quote

“Every mother blackbird thinks her baby is the blackest.”

Translation of this old saying…

“Every mother thinks her baby is the most beautiful.”

p.s. I am having issues with leaving comments on some blogs … when I type the cursor moves but no letters/words are showing up in the comments block?

the glint of the rising moon…

two posts in one day and three challenges in one post…

all I can say is it is nice and warm in my art cave cause baby it’s cold outside…

swan closeup

my initial inspiration was to use a beautiful swan postage stamp that I have had for some time (wish I could remember where I got it) and then one thing led to another with bits from my paper stash ..

faux resin paper

I recently tried this technique for making resin like paper  using thin book pages…an iron and beeswax…

papersit was easy and I was delighted to find that I could adhere torn pieces of waxed text with glue stick…

found poetry

some found poetry which was revealed after coats of gesso and paint had been added to the journal page also helped to inspire me…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz glint of the rising moon

this spread is for the Moo Mania CIRCLES challenge (the Seven Wonders lady on the right started out as a moo that grew a bit with the addition of papers)

since it is about time to be thinking about a cover for my bulging gesso journal I am considering adding a metal ATC that I have been working on which fits in nicely with Conny’s Mix it Monthly PLAY WITH FABRIC challenge as it has plastered lace and ribbon trim
