Polska

taking a break from organizing gave me a chance to create these two art journal pages for Art Journal Journey’s Post & Postage challenge which began with the image of the owl and a young girl from a page of green and brown images (wish I could give credit but they were already printed out with no identification)…

I had several postage stamps in mind but when I saw the colors in the lovely Polish stamp I knew it was the one…

Magpie's Nest Wren

because of a wren nesting in the corner of our back porch I was not able to photograph my pages in my favorite spot with great light…

Magpie's Nest singing wren through lace curtainthere is a lot of tweeting and activity going on with those precious birdies … I snapped the photo above from my computer chair looking through our net and lace curtain …

He wrote me a letter…

it is fun when the right ingredient presents itself and that is what happened on the left side of my gesso journal with the piece of plastered fancy netting that I just happened to have on my work table

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz He Wrote Me a Letter journal pages (1)

I also got to use some torn map which is always a favorite ingredient of mine (no more map collecting for me now … how many maps can one person have!)…

in all my clearing and cleaning out I have been able to pull my postage stamp collection together and just in time for this month’s Art Journal Journey Post & Postage challenge….

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz He Wrote Me a Letter journal pages (3)

speaking of rubber stamps I weakened a bit in the midst of my clearing out and placed an order for a handful of Seth Apter’s wonderful new Impression Obsession, Inc. rubber stamps … if you haven’t seen them already there is a nice sampler and link that can be found on his “The Altered Page” blog here …

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Be Yourself

(scrap paper… plaster… paint… my photograph of a statue…glittered netting and handwritten sticker)

for Art Journal Journey’s “favorite poems/quotes” challenge thinking of Oscar Wilde I remembered our trip to the UK in 2013 and visiting a park in Dublin with a dedicated area to him…

fun how one thing leads to another and can trigger sweet memories…

waves of one sea…

journaling on different kinds of surfaces like my chipboard tea cup book is proving to be a bit of a different challenge that I am having fun with…Magpie's Nest different journals

last year I created a loose leaf art journal working on both the front and back of each piece…

Magpie's Nest loose leaf art journal

I liked that format so much I thought I would begin another this time working in landscape/horizontal layout…

Magpie's Nest saves of one sea

here is my first page (layers of paint and plaster cloth) using part of this quote from a Baha’i poem:  “We are all the waves of one sea…We are all the leaves of one tree…We are all the flowers of one garden” for Art Journal Journey’s “favorite poems/quotes” challenge

Keep close to nature’s heart

Magpie's Nest Red Rosin Monoprint pagesthanks to my friend Jan for sharing a John Muir quote which was the inspiration for my latest red rosin monoprint page…

Magpie's Nest beginning page

the flower is from a book page showing the parts of a flower (I liked how it complimented the green of my mono printed pages)…

Magpie's Nest nature rubber stamps

I used some of my new plastered paper which was done over a page from a small phone book (paper phone books are almost a thing of the past here)…

Magpie's Nest John Muir quote

adding this to my entries #99 … #110 and #136 over at Art Journal Journey for this month’s “favorite poem/quotes” theme and the little butterfly is for the Moo Mania “Butterfly/Schmetterlinge” challenge

Pull Love Closely Around You…

Cherry Blossoms 2015Spring has sprung here in northern Virginia and it has me flitting here and there feeling energetic and excited (we even got to visit the cherry blossoms in Washington DC this year at twilight time)…

Magpie's Nest Flower Press

the other day I was busy emptying my flower press from the fall and loading the first layers of Spring blooms…

Magpie's Nest playing with plaster

when I thought it was so pretty out I decided it would be fun to play with plaster on our back porch which had me plastering anything that held still (almost)…

Magpie's Nest Plastered Papers

using fabrics and doilies as stencils…

Magpie's Nest Plastered tissue and fabric

this little plastic one makes such a nice burst pattern and I especially like it on tissue paper or peeled napkin even (you know the white layer you don’t want to throw away when you’ve peeled your napkins)…

Magpie's Nest Plastered Red Rosin Paper

all of that fun then led me to create two more pages in my handmade red rosin paper art journal…

the glint of the rising moon…

two posts in one day and three challenges in one post…

all I can say is it is nice and warm in my art cave cause baby it’s cold outside…

swan closeup

my initial inspiration was to use a beautiful swan postage stamp that I have had for some time (wish I could remember where I got it) and then one thing led to another with bits from my paper stash ..

faux resin paper

I recently tried this technique for making resin like paper  using thin book pages…an iron and beeswax…

papersit was easy and I was delighted to find that I could adhere torn pieces of waxed text with glue stick…

found poetry

some found poetry which was revealed after coats of gesso and paint had been added to the journal page also helped to inspire me…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz glint of the rising moon

this spread is for the Moo Mania CIRCLES challenge (the Seven Wonders lady on the right started out as a moo that grew a bit with the addition of papers)

crown headand my swan and lady also qualify for the AJJ BIRDS BEASTS & HUMANS challenge

possible cover for gesso journal

since it is about time to be thinking about a cover for my bulging gesso journal I am considering adding a metal ATC that I have been working on which fits in nicely with Conny’s Mix it Monthly PLAY WITH FABRIC challenge as it has plastered lace and ribbon trim

“Love, to thee my thoughts are turning, All through the night.  All for thee my heart is yearning, All through the night.  Though sad fate our lives may sever, Parting will not last forever, There’s a hope that leaves me never, All through the night. ”  – Ar hyd y nos, Welsh Folk Song, third verse

“Half of my Heart”

Magpie's Nest John Mayer collage

singer and songwriter John Mayer is a favorite artist of mine and I am lucky to have seen him live in concert several times over the years…

Magpie's Nest Half of My Heart (4)

his song “Half of my Heart” from his Battle Studies album inspired some journal pages in one of my larger (7.5 x 10″) art journals…

Magpie's Nest Half of My Heart

my newest Stencil Girl burst stencil from our wonderful local Goldenshill Papercrafts helped add the finishing touches to my pages which I am entering for the first time in the Moo Mania & More challenge of “Music is in the air …

~♥~

music has been an inspiration to me since as long as I can remember

“I was born in the arms of imaginary friends
Free to roam, made a home out of everywhere I’ve been

Then you come on crashing in
Like the realest thing
Trying my best to understand
All that your love can bring

Oh, half of my heart’s got a grip on the situation
Half of my heart takes time
Half of my heart’s got a right mind
To tell you that I can’t keep lovin’ you, can’t keep lovin’ you
Oh, with half of my heart

I was made to believe I’d never love somebody else
Made a plan, stay the man who can only love himself

Lonely was the song I sang
‘Til the day you came
Showing me another way
And all that my love can bring

Oh, half of my heart’s got a grip on the situation
Half of my heart takes time
Half of my heart’s got a right mind
To tell you that I can’t keep lovin’ you, can’t keep lovin’ you
Oh, with half of my heart, with half of my heart

Your faith is strong, but I can only fall short for so long
Down the road, later on
You will hate that I never gave more to you
Than half of my heart

But I can’t stop lovin’ you, I can’t stop lovin’ you
I can’t stop lovin’ you, I can’t stop lovin’ you,
I can’t stop lovin’ you with half of my
Half of my heart, oh half of my heart

Half of my heart’s got a real good imagination
Half of my heart’s got you
Half of my heart’s got a right mind to tell you
That half of my heart won’t do

Half of my heart is a shot gun wedding
To a bride with a paper ring
And half of my heart is the part of a man
Who’s never truly loved anything

Half of my heart, oh half of my heart
Half of my heart, oh half of my heart
Half of my heart, oh half of my heart”

step into the Light…

Magpie's Nest step into the Light (1)a couple more pages for Art Journal Journey’s “Living Beings September Challenge and because I used tea cups (torn from a peeled napkin) I am also including my pages for T over at Elizabeth and Bleubeard’s

Magpie's Nest step into the Light (2)

the lady I chose looks a bit tied up because she had on a wimple head covering originally so I cut her head covering away leaving her chin a bit short which is when I decided to use some silk ribbon that I hand dyed…

Magpie's Nest step into the Light (3)

some of the other ingredients I used were scraps of old book page stenciled with plaster (I so enjoy gluing bits of old paper onto old book pages as the papers seem to melt together so beautifully)…pressed flowers between tissue paper… computer generated words and a bit of rubber stamping with a speckled stamp that no longer had any identifying marks on it…

Magpie's Nest step into the Light

thank you for stopping by … I really appreciate your visit …
