COEXIST

a couple of days ago I shared the right hand side of my first RED pages for Linda’s Art Journal Journey theme of “Fifty shades of RED”

it is unusual that I do not finish both sides of a spread at the same time but I confess my creativity has been a little off center so far this year…magpies-nest-left-side-waiting

sometimes inspiration is right over your shoulder as this photo shows a bit of a hodgepodge of things that usually only we see at the top of our stairs…magpies-nest-shepard-fairey-poster

I scanned the  bumper sticker and cut the letters to fit my page vertically (by the way I would NEVER do this if I were going to sell what I made… this is strictly for personal use in my journal)…magpies-nest-coexist-supplies

a few more rubons and a bit of stamping with thanks to Jo of Let’s Art Journal and her great eye for detail …magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-left-page-coexist

she helped me remember with her nice comment on the right side of my spread when she remarked on the fine lines in the background which reminded me I had forgotten to mention I used a favorite Tin Can Mail Inkadinkado rubber stamp to add interest and tie into the black rubons a bit too…

life moves so fast I see I will be adding a bit of red pencil edging to the left hand page now that I see it on the big screen…

this week’s lesson in Lifebook 2017 is about using lots of layers of watercolor and other kinds of paints (hot mess at the moment LOL)… not wanting to waste any paint left on my palette for the work in progress above …magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-calling-card-before-pages

I smeared the dribs and drabs of paint onto smooth blank journal pages and then played with a new circle stencil and assorted colored pencils…magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-gesso-saves-the-day

Autumn in Everything…

happy to have some time in the middle of our beautiful Indian Summer days here in Virginia to share two spreads that I created over the last couple of weeks…magpies-nest-autumn-grows-pages

these pages were inspired by an ad for a ballet performance that I clipped from The Washington Post and I just happened to have a stencil that I wanted to play with too…magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-autumn-grows

I liked these pages so much I did not want to cover them up but I eventually forged ahead and had fun adding gold paint along with the Robert Browning quote…magpies-nest-patty-szymkowicz-autumn-gold

now for something a little different… these green and gold pages were an attempt to step outside my comfort zone using colors and collage in a different way…

I am still not crazy about the end result but thought I’d share both spreads with you since I had Valerie’s Golden Autumn theme in mind for Art Journal Journey this month when I created them..

true wonder…

earlier this month I created a page for Gill’s Art Journal Journey’s NATURE’S WONDERS that I shared hereMagpie's Nest BEFORE true wonder pages

more often than not I work on a spread rather than just one page but this time was one of those times…Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz page in processI stamped two Lynne Perrella stamps on the white thin layer peeled from a napkin adhering them to the page with matte medium adding color with a toothpick (the black highlights are Tim Holtz rubons that I also used on the Wonder page)…Magpie's Nest TRUE page

one of the things I enjoy very much about working over text in my collage backgrounds is what reveals itself without even trying… the rays and the French word for sun/soleil above are a good example

nature truly is a continuous wonder

oh how I enjoy nature and always have growing up in a household with parents that honored and preserved nature as much as possible…Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz lotus collagemy father was known to have annual feuds with sparrows that were relentless in their attempts to build nests in his Purple Martin houses… he cared alot about the Purple Martins who were great at eating mosquitoes returning faithfully to the garden each year…

I created two more pages in my red rosin monoprinted journal

PaperArtsy’s lovely Lynne Perrella stamps were fun to play with adding another favorite Tin Can Mail butterfly wing stamp for the background..

Magpie's Nest Bloom right page

it was a bit of a challenge to incorporate one of my 5 x 5 collages onto my already monoprinted pages trying to match the paints I used earlier…Magpie's Nest Bloom left

the final touch was adding some pressed flowers using matte medium under and over them on the pages with a couple of rubons too…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz BLOOM red rosin pages

I like how the words I used in all of the spreads flow like a bit of found “poetry”… they evolved after working randomly with no  theme for my journal (all it needs now is binding and a cover):

Keep moving forward…

Happiness…

Keep close to nature’s heart…

Pull Love closely around you and snuggle into its bliss…

What we think we become…

Wonder…

The present moment is a powerful goddess…

some new to me gold square paper helped inspire these gesso journal pages for Art Journal Journey’s TIME challenge along with a scrap of a Gustav Klimt napkin (my other AJJ entries this month are #30 & # 57)…

another spread in my art journal for AJJ’s “Flower Power” challenge this month…

Magpie's Nest Every Flower... (2)

I mixed photography with real pressed flowers (Nigella/Love in a Mist above and the daisy like flowers along the bottom are Fleabane which grow wild here in Virginia) …paint…gesso…washi tape…rubons and pencil scribbles…

this mystery lady’s dress (she popped up in an everyday dress on my work table) is made with two different photos of a blue Stokes Aster…the yellow buttercup is part of a sticker and her Larkspur hat is also a pressed flower from our garden…

Every flower...some supplies

always happy to use some of my washi tape collection…the stamped “grass” at the bottom was paper that I cleaned my gesso and paint brushes on…a small tube of green goauche exploded awhile ago so there was lots of that BRIGHT green paint too good to waste…

the lovely and talented Conny/Pia Rom has a Mix It Monthly (button on my sidebar) challenge that always delights and inspires and for some time now I have wanted to play along…

Directions to Discover…

time to play again in my “Spirit” journal

such fun to begin with a few blank pages glued together…

to see where they will lead…

my inspiration began with the icon images from a collage sheet using torn pieces of a page from a garden catalog where I had wiped off paint brushes and rubber stamps and gesso a long time ago…

I used matching paints to fill in the background adding some metallic rubons from Colorbox…

dry wall mesh and cheesecloth helped add some texture along with some stamping…

oftentimes the right words present themselves from scraps of paper and this time a failed (or was it) rub on attempt of words on the right ended up giving my pages an unplanned message…

I never sketch or really plan what I am going to create other than having an image or quote in mind usually working with what is close at hand (and that can be a lot to chose from if you know what I mean) …

letting everything unfold and happen is an exciting process…

thank you for your visit today you make sharing extra fun oxo
