when snow falls…

img_0414we had a “conversational” snowfall on Saturday which was just enough to add a sheer white blanket to the garden…img_0413

the birds got extra excited at the suet feeder even over just a few flakes…

I am joining Erika’s “Tell Me A Story” challenge at Art Journal Journeyimg_0417

the story behind my two page spread is simply my Love of snow with the special hush and purity it brings…img_0005

a couple of images torn from The Washington Post along with the words “drift” and “snow” were added to book pages that I had brayered with gesso…  I printed out the rest of the quote using our laser printer… the font that I chose happened to match perfectly… the finishing touch was some splatters of gesso…

Magpie's Nest swanning around

I am feeling a bit scattered and distracted…

Magpie's Nest altered pickle fork

but it is not a bad thing and I am okay with it…

Magpie's Nest Winter Mirror Mirror

last year I treated myself to some small live orchids over the winter months (the various blooms were irresistible and they were reasonably priced costing less than a cut bouquet of flowers)…

Magpie's Nest orchid stages

the blooms lasted a nice long while and then I kept the bare plants watered being careful to not over or under water them over the winter months (closest thing we have around here to a pet *ggg*)…

Magpie's Nest cuppa orchids

I was thrilled and delighted that two of the five orchids decided to repeat bloom which is proof that good things are worth waiting for…

our snow is almost all melted and I found the first tiny sign of spring out front yesterday…

Magpie's Nest Mourning Doves and Mockingbirds

Mr Magpie is getting lots of use out of his Yaktrax this winter which work like a charm to help ensure safe footing  (my photos were taken from our front and back porch and with the help of our zoom lens we have a closer look at the Mourning Doves and resident Mockingbird)…

I am content most days to enjoy the snow from the indoors…

snow outside our window

Mr Magpie made me a little snowman to decorate on the back porch so I got busy adding some Maple tree seeds for hair… Lunaria seeds for eyes… a sunflower seed for the nose… a bit of Thyme for her smile and Fennel sprigs for her arms…

snow day …

Mother Nature extended the Presidents Day weekend into four days with our first measurable snowfall of the season which is nothing compared to what lots of folks are experiencing in other parts of the U.S…

Frozen bird spa before snow

the hustle and bustle of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area has come to a crawl with schools and many businesses closed for the day (the bird spa with it’s heater is working extra hard this winter but water is still running in our farm fountain above…recent cold and very windy weather created a sort of ice sculpture)…

garden heart

we were expecting more snow but our area got almost half as much as predicted…

Oh deer Christmas Tree

just enough to blanket everything in pure white powdery snow or “pow” as our snowboarding son calls it…

T cup tower before heavy snow

in anticipation I put a little tea cup tower out in our back garden thinking it might look pretty in the snow (the teapot is a planter)…

T cup tower after snow

Mr Magpie arranged some Valentine rose petals for their last hurrah just off the back porch this morning…

with very cold temperatures the snow could stay on the ground for awhile…

the fact that it was snowing added heaps of charm in my book

and because it was a Tuesday some of the businesses were closed so it was very peaceful…

Mr Magpie was sure that the snow blowing sideways at times also helped the little town appear quiet…

Georgetown is less than an hour west of Denver with a population of a little over one thousand which is quite spread out…

Georgetown Trading Post

I found it photogenic at every turn…

and then there was our cozy room in the Swiss style chalet with a toasty corner fireplace and a hot tub on the back deck (make that a hot tub with snowy steps and icicles hanging from the cover…we wore hats and swimsuits and braved the cold wild blowing wind for a nice soak)…

birthday tea…

December is a festive time…

Ocean City and Berlin MD

and Mr Magpie helped make it extra special by whisking me away for a long birthday weekend…

Fagars Island OC crab cakes

to a new spot for us (a tucked away bayside treasure) a little over three hours drive to the beach …

Fager's Island getaway

we enjoyed some of THE most delicious Maryland Style Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes ever…

Fenwick Island OC Md

we did not mind at all having the beach to ourselves as we prefer that to the very busy and hectic summer season in Ocean City

Berlin Maryland

the nearby small town of Berlin, Maryland of Runaway Bride fame has some cute shops and is always fun to visit…

Main St Enchanted T Room Berlin MD

we had afternoon tea at the Main Street Enchanted Tea Room with the whole tea shop to ourselves as it was a Thursday which I admit had us acting a little silly after we discovered the hat rack…

Enchanted T Room Birthday T

Mr Magpie found the stash of “tiaras” which seemed to be a good fit for me as none of the hats quite fit my head with my braid pinned up in the back 😉 that’s my story and I am sticking to it

Sunset in a cup

it was a relaxing and lovely time and Mother Nature even gifted us with a perfect sunset to enjoy before we headed back home…

9 Dec 2013 Frozen in Time

The Snow Queen

each year I treat myself to a special wall calendar

this year the cover art of all things a Witches’ Calendar with brilliant scratchboard artwork by Jennifer Hewitson really spoke to me…

I have known a few “witches” in my time but other than that have no real connection to the topic…

Scratchart by Jennifer Hewitson

that said the January Snow Queen surrounded by children touched my heart in so many ways…

before January 2013 slips away I thought I would post these simple pages I created using some of my black and white gelli monoprinting cardstock, black gesso, a little blue Lumiere paint and white poster pen

here’s wishing you and yours a safe and happy Tea on Tuesday

we are on the road again…

this time to check on our boy OXO

tea cozy tea

hello and happy T day…

while we were at the Aylesbury Tea Room recently I treated myself to a sweet reversible tea cozy  made by the lovely and talented Jessica

it fits perfectly over the stainless steel tea pot I picked up in Ireland some years ago…

Jessica puts elastic in the bottom so you can just pop it over the tea pot and boy does it ever keep the tea piping hot …

my cup of decaf Irish Breakfast tea really hit the spot this chilly morning looking out at what’s left of a bit of snow we got late yesterday…

the lovely and talented Hermine is having a brilliant giveaway that you won’t want to miss …

her art is wonderful and we share a fondness for hearts…

for more T Tuesday stops be sure and visit Kimmie at her Art in Red Wagons…

junkles reveal

...where did December and January go…

thought you might like to see the rest of the junkle ornaments that came in from the Queen Bees swap around the holidays…

I had shown you Linda’s lovely altered tart tin ornament earlier…the shredded text is a perfect touch don’t you think…I really have a thing for bees and bee skeps too…

Nathalie transformed a vintage lightbulb into a twinkling beaded dangle…

great touches of tinsel and “snow” really make it sparkle…

Margaret used bits from an old/vintage bracelet…the silver burst is a bit from an ornament bauble…

other delicate treasures complete this lovely piece…

Carole layered fabric and paper to make a pretty “snippet roll” as she’s named it…held onto a wooden spool with a carpet tack…it unfurls to reveal lots of loveliness…

highlighted with her special stitching…you too can make a snippet roll…she shares how to here...

and here is my thimble bell birdie ornament again…made out of old garland…beads…bird and thimble with a little jingle bell hanging inside…

it is always fun to see where creative people go with a theme…this swap was a real delight and began with inspiration from here!
