swan song…

finally the red rosin paper art journal I started back in October of 2013 is complete (more about how my gesso and monoprint pages began when you click the link above) …Magpie's Nest Red Rosin Monoprint cover

I made a TAP transfer ironing it on cotton using a German swan image (swans are a favorite of mine for lots of reasons)…

adding bits of tea dyed lace and part of a flimmerstern along with a sweet spray of vintage flowers (some of those blooms also appear on a few pages inside the journal)…Magpie's Nest Swan book cover finishing touches

I got out one of my button jars to have a lookie look and found a button with hanging threads that seemed perfect…Magpie's Nest book binding

after deciding on the smaller poking tool I did a simple in and out tied binding… if you are interested in what’s inside the journal I have links to each of the spreads here

Magpie's Nest Queen Anne's Lace in the gardenI created two more pages for Yvonne’s great theme of IN MY GARDEN there is over at Art Journal Journey…
Magpie's Nest remembering
I could have taken a ‘before’ photo of the newspaper image of the lady that I painted over but all you see here is my altered version along with a couple of Isle of Man postage stamps that I picked up in an OXFAM charity shop in Oxford, England…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz like theseit was fun using layers of paint to help the swan image melt into the page…

Magpies Nest Patty Szymkowicz days like thesemy “Life is but a dream” art journal is filling up nicely and soon it will be time to decorate the cover…

Art Helps Me Breathe …

Magpie's Nest Deli and Red Rosin papermop up deli paper along with some red rosin paper that covered my work table for awhile made a nice background for an art journal that has just a couple of spreads completed…

Magpie's Nest Art Helps Me Breathe right pageon the right I used a postcard I had made altering it a bit to incorporate it onto the page (it was a fun surprise that the lady on the left popped up as she looks related to the lady above…sorry I cannot credit where the images are from)…Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Art Helps Me Breathe Journal PagesI am joining the Art Journal Journey MAPS challenge hosted by Mary C. What if I fall?

the last book in our local Mixed Media Collaborative art group‘s round robin has come my way and it is a real beauty touching my magpie heart…

Susan's bookmy friend Susan chose “Grow Wings” as the theme for her gorgeous book …

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Grow Wings ideasI took my time gathering special bits of this and that trying out several layouts before actually gluing anything in place (I even hand dyed some vintage white flowers that in the end I did not use because they were too puffy)…

Magpie's Nest Waterhouse TAP transfer

a John William Waterhouse sketch looked nice transferred onto sheer vintage baby dress fabric and stitched onto the gold square background paper I selected (I used Lesley Riley’s TAP for both images in these pages)…

Magpie's Nest Pressed Thyme and Goldens Paint

before falling asleep one night I got the idea to use some of my favorite Goldens Gold Paint to “gild” some pressed thyme leaves…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz What if I falleven though it was a bit fiddly brushing on the paint and then adhering them to the pages using Soft Gel Medium I was really pleased with the way they look…

Magpie's Nest What if you fly leftsome vintage embroidered sheer blue and green trim worked nicely on the piece of handmade paper Susan had added in her book … I highlighted the centers of the flowers by adding some gold paint…

Magpie's Nest What if you fly Swanpieces of plastered German lace curtain added texture to my pages as well…

Second on the 2nd for July … Swans

altered books have fascinated me since early in 2000 and I have always admired swans…

Grab button for Second on the 2nd

today I am revisiting a post from July 2008 and joining with Elizabeth’s second look on the 2nd of the month … here goes:

be yourself…

“Be yourself everyone else is already taken.” -Oscar Wilde

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz Be Yourself

(scrap paper… plaster… paint… my photograph of a statue…glittered netting and handwritten sticker)

for Art Journal Journey’s “favorite poems/quotes” challenge thinking of Oscar Wilde I remembered our trip to the UK in 2013 and visiting a park in Dublin with a dedicated area to him…

Magpie's Nest Oscar Wilde Statue

we had the traveling tea cup along and had so many fun adventures

Magpie's Nest St Stephen's Park Dublin SWANS

and then we wandered into St Stephen’s Green and came upon a beautiful family of swans… I was beside myself with joy and we were amazed at how comfy they were on their little strip of grass with people on every sideMagpie's Nest Dublin battery recharge

fun how one thing leads to another and can trigger sweet memories…

another tea cup in my chip board art journal (each cup measures about 4 x 7 inches)…

Magpie's Nest tea cup collage steps

I found that by using a sanding block I can trim off most of the excess paper reducing the amount of scissor and craft knife trimming needed … working around the handle is a bit tricky…

Magpie's Nest two chipboard art journal cups

my intention is to keep these cups rather simple but that said I spent a fair amount of time painting golden stars with a toothpick and resisting the urge to add more collage elements…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz tea cup art journal

it was fun to see what names popped up on the piece of Virginia map I randomly selected for the background (there is even a spot called “Healing Springs”)…

Magpie's Nest swanning around

I am feeling a bit scattered and distracted…

Magpie's Nest altered pickle fork

but it is not a bad thing and I am okay with it…

Magpie's Nest Winter Mirror Mirror

last year I treated myself to some small live orchids over the winter months (the various blooms were irresistible and they were reasonably priced costing less than a cut bouquet of flowers)…

Magpie's Nest orchid stages

the blooms lasted a nice long while and then I kept the bare plants watered being careful to not over or under water them over the winter months (closest thing we have around here to a pet *ggg*)…

Magpie's Nest cuppa orchids

I was thrilled and delighted that two of the five orchids decided to repeat bloom which is proof that good things are worth waiting for…

Magpie's Nest two blooming orchids

our snow is almost all melted and I found the first tiny sign of spring out front yesterday…

wishing you a very happy T day full of nice surprises along with everyone over at Elizabeth’s Altered Book Lover...

the glint of the rising moon…

two posts in one day and three challenges in one post…

all I can say is it is nice and warm in my art cave cause baby it’s cold outside…

swan closeup

my initial inspiration was to use a beautiful swan postage stamp that I have had for some time (wish I could remember where I got it) and then one thing led to another with bits from my paper stash ..

faux resin paper

I recently tried this technique for making resin like paper  using thin book pages…an iron and beeswax…

papersit was easy and I was delighted to find that I could adhere torn pieces of waxed text with glue stick…

found poetry

some found poetry which was revealed after coats of gesso and paint had been added to the journal page also helped to inspire me…

Magpie's Nest Patty Szymkowicz glint of the rising moon

this spread is for the Moo Mania CIRCLES challenge (the Seven Wonders lady on the right started out as a moo that grew a bit with the addition of papers)

crown headand my swan and lady also qualify for the AJJ BIRDS BEASTS & HUMANS challenge

possible cover for gesso journal

since it is about time to be thinking about a cover for my bulging gesso journal I am considering adding a metal ATC that I have been working on which fits in nicely with Conny’s Mix it Monthly PLAY WITH FABRIC challenge as it has plastered lace and ribbon trim

Second on the 2nd for February 2015

February already and it’s time for the second “Second on the 2nd” thanks to Elizabeth at Altered Book Lover for the chance to look back and repost something you would like to share again…

here is a look back to February 2012 and an altered heart book that I created…

Roses in December T…

the garden in June

it was my plan to share these summer roses with you all back in December but that month flew by and here we are well into January already…

stringing roses

my playing with roses was inspired by a conversation with the lovely and talented Dorthe of Den Lille Lade back in June of 2014 when she and I talked about how we liked to make rosebud garlands and strings…

June roses and forget-me-nots

the weather was beautiful for sitting out on the back porch back then...

Stringing roses collage

the blooms and strands have faded since last summer but are still a lovely reminder of the garden in bloom especially in these cold winter days (it’s so grey out today I can’t get a good photo of the rose strands as they look now)…

Roses in December Quote

wishing you a happy T Day along with everyone over at Elizabeth and Bleubeard…
