getting plastered…

seeing what my friend Lisa created using Kate Thompson’s  plastered textiles really got me going in a fun direction

Full of Gracea free image of The Three Graces from a wonderful Misty Mawn online class sparked two different collage pieces…

Patty Szymkowicz GRACE

my attempt at a gel medium transfer onto plastered fabric did not turn out all that well until I decided I really liked it in its imperfection adding some indigo cotton pieces and selvage from a piece of navy blue velvet along with tulle and the computer generated word GRACE (8 x 10 inches … 20.3 x 25.4 cm)

Patty Szymkowicz Three Graces (1)

my second transfer was easier working on plain watercolor paper…

Patty Szymkowicz Three Graces

combining plastered linens and laces with some of my hand dyed pieces and a flattened tea spoon made creating this 9 x 10.5 inch (22.8 x 26.6 cm) piece extra fun (now if I could remember who gave me that sweet swan spoon!)…

ever onward stone angel (1)

 my Old San Juan Stone Angel collage measures approximately 9 x 12 inches (22.8 x 30.4 cm)…

ever onward stone angel

is anyone familiar with the 2011 book by Stephanie Lee and Judy Wise Plaster Studio: Mixed-Media Techniques for Painting, Casting and Carvingit looks interesting in the reviews

the approximate number of graves in the Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazziz Cemetery

just outside the fortress walls in Old San Juan

is around one thousand…

not sure if Mr Magpie and I took a thousand photos…

with our two cameras…

we did spend a couple of hours snapping away…

“The angels are always near

to those who are grieving,

to whisper to them

that their loved ones are safe

in the hand of God.”

this Sunday all of the photographs were taken by my Mr Magpie…

we both had our cameras that day in the cemetery…

and were snapping pix like crazy…

hope you enjoy these in your artwork…

“The golden moments in the stream of life

rush past us

and we see nothing but sand;

the angels come to visit us,

and we only know them

when they are gone.”

Wordless Wednesday … Isla del Encanto … Puerto Rico

Treasure Tea…

as I keep mentioning we found Puerto Rico to be a true treasure and enjoyed everything about our time there…

Old San Juan is a very popular cruise ship stopover…

Mr Magpie and I have never been tempted to take a cruise

as being free to wander is more our cup of tea…

while in Old San Juan we were happy to find two junk shoppes…

one quite near our first hotel where I picked up a couple of Madonnas and a deck of cards…

and then we found Franky’s…

he is quite a character with great stories to tell and he even knew The Gallery Inn having sold them antiques in the past…

I spied a couple of small containers full of broken jewelry bits on the floor and got totally distracted…

we were happy magpies…

no photos can really convey the eclectic array of ‘treasures’ to be found there and we just scratched the surface…

I was tickled to find that vintage hat with lots of flowery bits falling off just begging to be used…

we are not big shoppers but coming home with these trinkets really did give me a thrill…

here’s wishing you a Happy T on Tuesday and I cannot promise that I won’t be taking you back to Puerto Rico for another time or two…

Enjoy Your Day!

Stone Angel Sunday 2

last Sunday I shared some images with you from this very beautiful cemetery in Old San Juan also known as La Perla Cemetery…

***please enjoy these FREE Downloads for your personal use only…

there are more than just angels in the cemetery by the sea…

the details in the marble are truly breathtaking…

we did notice some damage with fingers and even arms missing…

I will share a stirring example with you next Sunday…

capturing the complete images was a bit challenging

because so many of the monuments are very close together…

Brightest of Blessings to you today and always…
